Toy Box

Restoring Dignity and Empowering Parents to Provide

"I’ve been going to Toy Box for the past 4 years. I look forward to it every year. I’m a single mom and it is the only way I can provide for my children at Christmas. Is there anything I can do to keep Toy Box going?" - A Toy Box Customer

Toy Box is a non-profit organization that operates a Christmas store for disadvantaged families. The store is open just 1 day a year – in December – and takes place at an elementary school in South Sacramento. Eligible parents and guardians receive vouchers from Healthy Start caseworkers, which allows them to shop at the store. The store sells toys for just twenty percent of their retail cost. These very affordable prices allows parents to choose and purchase gifts for their own children, thus maintaining their dignity and empowering them to provide for their family.

The Toy Box store is more than just a store, however. It is also a festive holiday experience for the whole family. While parents shop for their gifts, they are assisted by a personal shopper who helps them select and carry the gifts. Once they have made their purchases, parents can go to the Hospitality Room to rest and enjoy refreshments as they wait for their gifts to be wrapped for free. In our Kids Corner, children enjoy making holiday crafts and doing other fun activities while being supervised by friendly volunteers. Families will also often leave with books, school supplies, toiletries, and clothes.
